Inside and out, the revitalized Galaxy S6 is scaring its predecessor and again introduces a great sense of excitement in the Samsung flagship. This is probably the first Android smartphone of the year, which has improved the quality of the screen, the performance of the camera and the design. The S6 ($ 199.99 with contract) wins our publishing award on Verizon Wireless.
Lity was great in my tests, with a high volume and natural tones in the ear piece. The broadcasts via the microphone were also very clear and the noise suppression effectively softens the moderate noise of the street. Samsung has reduced the audio tuning function, which you can use to adjust the sound to your liking. Note that this affects the quality of the call and the audio quality of the media. The S6 also supports Verizon’s HD functions for voice and video calling.
The Galaxy S5Best award from last year from Amazon and a rating of 4 received the highest score for their excellent wireless performance. The network performance is still good for the S6, despite the new metal construction, which is generally less favorable for wireless transmissions. In tests alongside an iPhone 6 on Verizon, the S6 has been created with an average of 2.5 Mbps down and 1.04 Mbps up. It is not really huge, but on a particularly difficult day for the Verizon network, the S6 delivered on average 5 Mbps lower than 3 Mbps of the iPhone 6, which you will probably notice during normal use. Unlike the T-Mobile model, the Verizon S6 does not support Samsung’s Download Booster feature, which combines LTE and Wi-Fi for more reliable connectivity.
In a battery-down test, where we streamed a YouTube video on LTE with the screen brightness set to maximum, the S6 lasted 7 hours, 13 minutes. It is linked to the results we saw on the T-Mobile model, which lasted 7 hours, 48 minutes and much better than the 4 hours and 33 minutes of the iPhone 6 in the same test.
Software and conclusions
Samsung has increased its software load this year: a decent format of 23.24 GB is immediately available on the 32 GB of internal storage. The preloading however remains fairly heavy, with more than 20 applications that I do not find essential for most users. Our test unit comes with Samsung apps such as Milk Music and S Health, Verizon apps such as VZ Navigator and NFL Mobile and third-party apps like Amazon App Store and Candy Crush Soda. Fortunately, you can remove most applications from third parties, but the mostly useless apps from Verizon can not be turned off. In addition, Verizon continues to push its own SMS and MMS messaging application against standard Google or Samsung options. You can of course change the default mail application, but that is another useless step. In addition, Samsung Pay, like the T-Mobile model, did not install the Verizon S6 at the launch.
After a year of decline for the Galaxy S range, Samsung regains its Android dominance with the Galaxy S6. It’s more than the HTC One M9 $ 449.99 at T-Mobile, and although we have not seen the LG G4 or a successor to the Motorola Moto X, I suspect that the S6 will continue. This is the best Android smartphone currently available, with the iPhone 6 like some other Android smartphones, making this the choice of our publishers on Verizon Wireless.
